Marā Tui and Marā Nui Community Garden, Kerikeri
Marā Tui Community Garden Educational Hub and Marā Nui (big) Community Garden are both part of a large community garden located on the Kerikeri Organic family land, at 1188 Bulls Road, SH10 Kerikeri.
Māra Tui is a relatively newly established community garden, seed & plant library and educational Hub. It’s become a valued meeting space over the past few years, with a focus on Health, Food, Education and building Community. There is an emphasis on growing healthy kai and supporting learners of all ages, from parents and children, through to adults.
The garden has a small food forest, worm compost, a seed library, a wide variety of herbs and other useful plants, an undercover gazebo area and a few small cabins for tools, kitchen stuff and a reading nook.
Regular events and classes, such as Crop Swaps, Working Bees Gardening Workshops bring people together to learn, share and build community and food resilience.
Over the past two years while establishing the space many different people have helped along the way, volunteering in the garden, donating resources and supporting in various ways. Community groups have held a number of well supported regular events including educational talks, social gatherings and gardening classes. The Māra Tui is developing into a busy and highly valued hub!
Looking to the future, the Māra Tui community have a strong desire to see the space further developed and properly resourced hub enabling it to continue to thrive and expand. With the support of Kerikeri Organic, Transition Towns network, Tai Tokelau Timebank and The Resilient Communities Charitable Trust, we are now seeking substantial funding to make all this happen!
